How to Plan a Bicycle Trip with Kids: Route Tips for Náchod and the Surrounding
Planning your first bike trip with kids seems simple—until the first “I can’t go anymore” comes after just five minutes. Every parent knows that instead of a leisurely ride, it often turns into a logistical mission. To turn a family bike trip into an experience you’ll fondly remember, good physical fitness alone isn’t enough. The key is smart planning, proper technique, and, above all, understanding the kids’ pace. In our region, where the hills can sometimes be daunting, this is doubly true.
What does an ideal bike route for children look like?
Forget about the distance and elevation you’re used to from your own training. A child’s world works differently. Even a small hill you barely notice can be an insurmountable obstacle for little legs. An ideal route should therefore be as flat as possible, with a smooth surface and ideally without car traffic.
It is just as important to plan for stops. Children don’t just need a destination, but also small “rewards” along the way – a bridge, stones by the water, a playground, or a promised ice cream. These little milestones are what keep their attention and motivation going.
How many kilometers can children manage?
When planning the length of a bike trip with children, it’s best to follow a simple rule: a shorter route with a buffer is better than an ambitious plan that ends in a crisis.
- 3–5 years: approximately 3–6 km
- 5–7 years: approx. 5–10 km
- 7–10 years: roughly 10–20 km
Every child is different, but these values serve as a good guideline.
What to do when “I can’t go on” happens
This sentence comes up on almost every trip – and it’s not a problem if you expect it. The key is to stop before fatigue turns into resistance. A short break, a snack, or just a change of pace can often work wonders. It’s also worth having a plan B – the option to shorten the route, return the same way, or get closer by car. The goal isn’t performance, but a good experience.
Preparation and safety: Don’t underestimate the technical side
Before you head out, spend a few minutes checking the bikes. Properly inflated tires, working brakes, and a lubricated chain make a bigger difference than you might think. Children often won’t say something feels wrong – they’ll just get tired sooner.
Of course, a properly fitting helmet is essential. It should sit level, cover the forehead, and be tightened so that no more than two fingers fit under the chin strap. Also think about visibility – a rear light or reflective elements increase safety even during the day.
Bike trip tips with kids: Náchod and surroundings
The Náchod region offers ideal conditions for cycling trips with children – from flat cycle paths to easy off-road routes.
- Road to Peklo - A popular classic route leads from Náchod along the Metuje River to Peklo. The route is approximately 8–10 km long (round trip), follows asphalt without car traffic, and is mostly shaded by forest. Ideal for children from 5 years old.
- Kudowa-Zdrój and waffles within reach - The cycle path from Běloves to Kudowa-Zdrój offers a smooth surface and minimal traffic. This approximately 6–8 km route is suitable even for the youngest children or beginners. A spa park and popular waffles await at the destination.
- Babiččino Valley without hills - If you’re looking for peaceful nature, head to Ratibořice. Starting in Česká Skalice or near Spyta allows you to avoid hills. Depending on the variant, the route is 5–12 km long and suitable for all age groups.
- Loop around Rozkoš Reservoir - A newly completed loop around the reservoir, opening this month, offers flat routes with beautiful views. Ideal for children from 6 years old and a relaxed family trip.
Tip for active families: First bike trail
If children are confident on a bike, you can also try easy cycling trails designed for kids.
- Trails above Náchod - An easy loop towards Peklo and Lipí combines forest roads and undemanding natural sections. The route is about 10–12 km long and suitable for children from 6 years old.
- Singletrack Glacensis - In the Kudowa-Zdrój area, you’ll find an ideal singletrack for children. The “Źródełko” loop (approx. 4 km) follows a smooth forest trail without technical obstacles and is perfect for a first off-road experience.
- Trutnov Trails - Trutnov Trails are among the best trail centers in the Czech Republic. Easy trails like Floutek or Kozí trail feature smooth surfaces, bermed turns, and a playful profile. Suitable for children from 7 years old.
Even on easy trails, a child should be able to brake safely and maintain direction.
Off-road only with full equipment
When riding off-road, it’s worth thinking one step ahead. In addition to a helmet, it’s advisable to pack cycling gloves to protect palms in case of a fall, and light protectors for knees and elbows. Wider tires with lower pressure also provide better confidence off-road.
