Eugene Christophe, the French racing cyclist born on 22 January 1885, is considered the inventor of toe clips. In 1925 he sold his invention to the company Poutrait-Morin (today known as Zéfal). He was the director of this company until his death in 1970. Since then Zéfal has been selling these legendary Christophe toe clips.
