The protection of Fenix batteries consists of internal safety mechanisms and protective electronics. The added electronic circuits prevent the cell from being overcharged, excessively discharged, short-circuited or subjected to excessively high current draw. If the battery electronics detect that limit values have been reached, they safely disconnect the cell.

The internal protection consists of a separator, overheating protection (PTC thermal protection) and a special explosion-proof valve. If the gas pressure in the cell exceeds a certain limit, the internal separator separates the electrodes inside the battery and thereby de facto interrupts the exothermic reaction, and the explosion-proof valve releases the excess gas pressure outside the battery.
