Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA, from the English Branched Chain Amino Acids) make up as much as 30% of the total amount of muscle tissue. Unlike other amino acids, most BCAAs (L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine) pass through the liver unchanged and are metabolised mainly in the muscles. There they stop the breakdown of muscle proteins after carbohydrate stores (glycogen) are depleted during intense training and exercise.
