Park Tool CC-3.2 Chain Checker
A worn chain on a bike can cause poor shifting and over time lead to excessive wear of the derailleur and rear sprockets, which can mean a much more expensive repair.
What the Park Tool CC-3.2 does
- Measures chain wear (elongation): Over time the chain pins and bushings wear, which causes the chain to lengthen. This is not true stretching but wear that increases the length of the links.
- Prevents more expensive repairs: A worn chain can damage the cassette and chainrings. Replacing the chain in time helps avoid pricier repairs.
How the CC-3.2 works
- It is a “go/no-go” type gauge.
- One end measures 0.5% wear, the other 0.75%:
0.5%: Recommended limit for 11- and 12-speed chains.
- 0.75%: Limit wear for 9- and 10-speed chains.
- For 5- to 8-speed chains replacement is often recommended between 0.75% and 1.0%.
If the side marked 0.5% engages, the chain has reached that wear.
- If the 0.75% side engages, the chain is more worn and should be replaced (depending on the chain type).
Compatibility
- Suitable for most derailleur chains from 5- to 12-speed.
- Not suitable for single-speed chains and hub gear chains, which wear differently.
Why use the CC-3.2
- Helps prevent drivetrain damage
- Quick and easy to use
- Accurate measurement thanks to permanent markings
Recommendation
Check the chain every 800–1600 km, or more often when riding in rain or mud. Replacing the chain in time is cheaper than replacing the cassette or chainrings.
