The aerodynamically optimised tread pattern of this tyre certainly looks unconventional: 48 small dimples are evenly distributed across its surface. These so-called "vortex generators" control the turbulence of the airflow on the surface of the front wheel. The result is an optimised airflow that reduces the drag of the entire wheel–tyre system.
Aero 111 technology and the sailing effect:
Even with lower rim profiles the rider benefits from this effect, because the laminar airflow stays attached to the rim for longer. This reduces the aerodynamic drag of the wheel–tyre system at all speeds.
