How to ride an electric bike in winter. Don´t put off riding your e-bike!

Riding an e-bike in winter has its own charm—forest trails covered in snow, crisp air, fewer people outside, and a special calm you won’t find in other seasons. At the same time, it requires more preparation and a slightly different approach than riding in summer. Low temperatures change battery behavior, surfaces are slippery, and the ride itself requires gentler use of motor assistance. However, if you know how to prepare, winter riding can be safe, comfortable, and fun.

Preparing your e-bike before every ride

The foundation is a thorough check of the bike before you head out. Brakes must be perfectly adjusted because cold and moisture increase braking distances, and lower-quality pads may lose performance. Pay close attention to tires as well—in winter, wider models with a more aggressive tread work much better, helping shed snow and providing higher grip. In truly demanding conditions, studded tires are worth it.

Tire pressure – The golden rule of winter traction

Learn to work with tire pressure as well:

  • Reduce pressure by 10–20% compared to your summer setup.
  • Your bike will gain significantly better traction and grip on slippery surfaces.
  • The goal is a larger contact patch with the ground.

The chain and drivetrain in general take a beating in winter due to moisture and especially road salt. It’s recommended to use a thicker winter lubricant that resists water better. If possible, have the bike serviced before winter—check the brakes, drivetrain, bearings, and the motor condition. Any issues will show up much faster in winter conditions.

How to take care of the battery so it doesn’t lose performance

The battery is the most sensitive part of winter operation. Low temperatures reduce its performance and range, sometimes quite significantly. At temperatures around freezing, you can expect the battery to last roughly 20 to 30 percent less than in summer. It helps to keep it warm—ideally indoors—and insert it into the bike right before riding. For longer rides, there are special insulating neoprene covers that prevent rapid cooling.

Charging should only be done at room temperature. Never connect a cold or even frozen battery to a charger. After the ride, remove it again, wipe it down, and let it warm up before charging. This procedure significantly extends its service life.

Proper clothing for a comfortable winter ride

On an e-bike, your body doesn’t warm up as much because, thanks to the motor, you don’t pedal as intensely as on a regular bike. That’s why proper layering is even more important. The base layer should be functional underwear that wicks away sweat. Add a warm mid-layer such as merino or a fleece sweatshirt. Choose an outer jacket that is windproof and at least partially waterproof. Membrane pants or winter cycling models with fleece provide sufficient thermal insulation.

Hands and feet are most exposed to cold, so choose warm gloves, ideally with a windproof membrane. A thin skull cap under the helmet works well, and for the neck a multifunctional neck gaiter. If you ride in cycling shoes, use winter versions or at least quality shoe covers. Visibility is essential in winter—days are short and weather changes quickly—so it’s a good idea to equip the bike with powerful front and rear lights and add reflective elements to your clothing.

Riding technique in winter conditions

The ride itself follows slightly different rules in winter. The motor tends to engage abruptly, which can cause slipping on snow or ice. Always start in a lower assistance mode and pull away slowly. On snow, it’s best to keep a steady cadence and avoid sudden direction changes. On ice, it’s best to ride as straight as possible and brake with maximum sensitivity.

Braking requires more use of the front brake, but always smoothly—a sudden grab can cause a skid. In corners, shift your center of gravity slightly inward and aim for the smoothest possible line without abrupt leaning. On descents, move your body further back so the rear wheel has more stability; on climbs, shift your weight forward for better traction.

Post-ride maintenance is absolutely essential in winter

After returning home, always clean your e-bike. Lukewarm water and a cloth are enough; pressure washers aren’t suitable because they can force water into the motor or bearings. Pay special attention to areas exposed to road salt. Clean the chain and re-lubricate it, because it dries out and corrodes quickly in winter. Dry the battery and connector contacts and, if needed, treat them with a spray that repels water. Let the bike dry in a dry room and never leave it outside in freezing conditions for long periods. Store the battery at a temperature between 10 and 20 °C.

Safety, route planning, and long-term care

Adapt your route choice to the conditions. In winter, it pays to ride on routes you know well, because potholes, ice, or other obstacles may be hidden under snow. If you’re planning a longer trip, keep in mind that it gets dark earlier and the weather can change quickly. If there’s freezing rain or heavy snowfall, it’s sometimes better to skip the ride entirely.

If you want to extend the service life of your e-bike, consider protective frame films that act as a barrier against salt. Store the bike in a dry place above freezing and schedule more frequent servicing, ideally every two to three months during the winter season.

Winter e-bike riding may surprise you with its relaxed vibe and atmosphere.

It does require more careful preparation, but if you take good care of the battery, tires, and your own comfort, you’ll gain a great way to stay active all winter long. An e-bike helps you handle snowy paths with less effort, and with the right technique, gear, and maintenance, your winter riding will be safe and enjoyable.

Winter e-bike maintenance and preparation: Overview
Component Before the ride After the ride (key winter maintenance)
Brakes Perfect adjustment (cold increases braking distance). Check function and wipe off moisture (especially pads and rotors).
Battery Insert it into the bike right before the start. Use an insulating cover. REMOVE from the bike, wipe it, let it warm up (room temperature), and only then charge. Store at 10–20 °C.
Tires  Wider tread, more aggressive pattern. Lower pressure by 10–20% for better traction. Visual inspection, remove ice/small stones.
Drivetrain/Chain Use a thicker winter lube with better water resistance. Thorough cleaning (especially road salt!) and immediate re-lubrication.
Frame and Contacts — Clean with lukewarm water, dry contacts, and treat with a water-repellent spray.

Mahle vs. Bosch: Which motor is better for a gravel e-bike?

Gravel e-bikes have become a symbol of freedom, performance, and technological minimalism. They combine the lightness of a road bike with the adventurous spirit of off-road riding and add electric assistance that expands your possibilities. The basis of every e-gravel bike is its drive system – and it is this that determines how the bike will perform, how it will behave on hills, and how naturally it will ride above the assistance limit. Today, we will compare in detail the two most commonly used systems in modern gravel e-bikes: Mahle X20 / X35 and Bosch Performance Line SX.

Bicycle lights with radar: Greater visibility and safety on the road

Rear lights with integrated radar combine two key safety features: they increase the cyclist’s visibility whilst actively monitoring the area behind the bike. As soon as a vehicle approaches from behind, the cycle radar immediately alerts the cyclist – whether via a compatible cycle computer, smartphone or watch, or directly through visual or audible signals. This gives the cyclist valuable time to react without having to constantly look over their shoulder.
